Review: The Welch Labs Illustrated Guide to AI

The Welch Labs Illustrated Guide to AI The Welch Labs Illustrated Guide to AI by Stephen Welch
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This a beautifully conceived and put together text book. I was blown away with the quality of the videos on YT and hence not surprised that the author has managed to put together such a high quality production in physical form. The book is heavy - in terms of weight - which meant it took some time and cost some dollars to ship to Singapore, but it was a joy to find it waiting outside my house. The book is hefty - in that it covers 70 years of machine learning from Rosenblatt’s perceptron to attention models and diffusion.

When I started building neural networks in 1990 there were few accessible textbooks. I had to bribe one computer-scientist author with a bottle of wine to explain how to implement some of self organising algorithms.

This has it all. Diagrams, models, beautiful illustrations and code.

It also has some exercises, and the author has left wide margins for the reader to annotate on… no way… it is too beautiful for that.

Decus Et Tutamen.

I loved the book and gave it Five Stars.

Review: Then I Am Myself the World: What Consciousness Is and How to Expand It

Then I Am Myself the World: What Consciousness Is and How to Expand It by Christof Koch My rating: 5 of 5 stars Christof Koch’s latest book gives a good overview of his work in neuroscience spanning several decades. Koch always likes a bet, and talks about settling his 25 year wager with David Chalmers: in June 2023 he handed over a case of fine Madeira wine for failing to have identified the neural correlates of consciousness in the preceding 25 years. He thinks he is closer in the elusive search for the seat of consciousness, with the hunt narrowing towards the back of the neocortex, and reckons the next 25 years or so should see it pinned down further. In terms of ‘how’ consciousness works, he is now a fervent advocate of the ambitious Integrated Information Theory (IIT) of Giuilio Tononi, a theory that more than 100 consciouness researchers have branded pseudoscience. The chapter on IIT is, unsurprisingly, the most dense. The rest of the book is ...
